Poles of Belonging
The Poles of Belonging is a community art project by Glen Eira Adult Learning Centre (GEALC) in partnership with Glen Eira City Council.
Six power poles along McKinnon Road are being transformed into vibrant artworks celebrating Belonging, Community, Inclusion, Diversity, Harmony and Learning for Life. Created by local community members, each pole tells a unique story through symbols and colour, reflecting the rich cultural diversity and shared values of our community.

Pole of Belonging
Represents feeling welcomed, safe and at home. The central heart symbolises kindness and connection, while the open arms reflect a place that welcomes everyone. Together, they celebrate the importance of belonging.
Pole of Community
Represents working together and building a caring neighbourhood. The tree symbolises growth through connection, while the joined hands, home, shared meal and caring hands celebrate friendship, volunteering and the strength of a community.
Pole of Harmony
Represents peace, respect and living well together. The birds symbolise different people and cultures sharing the same space, while the branches reflect friendship and mutual respect. Together, they celebrate a community where diversity lives in harmony.
Pole of Inclusion
Represents a community where everyone has a place and a voice. The speech bubbles displaying greetings in many languages, celebrate the richness of our multicultural community and remind us that a simple “hello” can build friendships and connection
Pole of Diversity
Celebrates the many cultures, identities and stories that enrich our community. The vibrant native flowers and foliage symbolise the beauty found in our differences, reminding us that, like nature, diversity makes our community stronger and more colourful.
Pole of Learning
Celebrates growth, curiosity and learning at every stage of life. The vine represents the lifelong learning journey, while the symbols of language, digital skills, creativity, sewing and wellbeing reflect the many opportunities to learn, connect and thrive.
